An account executive resume has to answer one question quickly: will this person hit our number? AE hiring managers read dozens of resumes that say "managed the full sales cycle" and "built strong relationships". The ones that get interviews show attainment, deal shape and context in the first few lines of each role.
What AE hiring managers check first
- Quota attainment, by year, with the quota itself if you can share it.
- Revenue closed: ARR, ACV or total contract value, and which one you mean.
- Deal shape: average deal size, sales cycle length, and who signed.
- Segment: SMB, mid market or enterprise, and new business or expansion.
- Pipeline generation: how much of your pipeline you sourced yourself.
- Consistency: results across several years and roles, not one great quarter.
- Ranking and recognition, such as President's Club or your place on the team.
Add a scope line to every role
Directly under each job title, write one or two lines that set the scene: what the company sells, who you sold to, your segment and your typical deal. For example: "Mid market new business for a payroll software company. Average ACV around [$X], three to six month cycle, selling to CFOs." With that context, every number underneath becomes easier to judge.
Before and after examples
These are illustrations. Use your own real figures and be ready to explain each one.
Example 1
- Before: "Consistently exceeded quota."
- After: "[Year]: [X]% of a [$X] quota, ranked [X] of [Y] AEs. [Year]: [X]% of a [$X] quota."
Example 2
- Before: "Managed the full sales cycle for new business."
- After: "Closed [$X] in new ARR in [year] across [X] new logos, with an average deal of [$X] and a [X] month cycle."
Example 3
- Before: "Responsible for prospecting and pipeline."
- After: "Self sourced [X]% of my pipeline through outbound and partner referrals."
Example 4
- Before: "Worked on large enterprise deals."
- After: "Closed the company's largest deal of [year], a [$X] multi year contract with a [industry] enterprise, after a [X] month cycle with [X] stakeholders."
Example 5
- Before: "Ran demos and discovery calls."
- After: "Raised my demo to close rate from [X]% to [Y]% by introducing mutual action plans on every deal over [$X]."
Lead with attainment
Put your attainment in the first bullet of your most recent role, and show it for each year where you can. If you missed a year, you don't need to hide the role. Lead with another real result, such as your biggest deal or a new territory you opened, and be ready to talk about the year honestly.
Show you can build pipeline
Many AE roles, especially at growing companies, expect you to create part of your own pipeline. If you did, give it a number: the share you self sourced, or the value of opportunities you opened. It is one of the clearest ways to stand out from AEs who only worked inbound.
Tailor to the segment you are applying for
Moving up from SMB to mid market, or from mid market to enterprise? Lead with the evidence that shows you are ready: your largest deals, longest cycles and most senior buyers. Applying for a new logo role? Put new business ahead of renewals.
Mistakes to avoid on an AE resume
- No quota context. "Closed $900k" means little without the target and segment.
- Mixing up ARR, ACV and TCV without saying which one you mean.
- Methodology as keywords. Show MEDDICC or Challenger in action rather than just listing them.
- Unexplainable numbers. Interviewers will ask about your attainment and your biggest deal.

FAQ
Q: How long should an account executive resume be?
A: One page for most AEs with under five years of experience, and up to two pages for senior or enterprise sellers with several relevant roles.
Q: Should I share my exact quota on my resume?
A: If your employer allows it, yes, because it gives your attainment context. If not, show attainment as a percentage and describe the segment and deal size.
Q: Is ARR or ACV better on a resume?
A: Use whichever your company measured, and label it. Hiring managers mainly want consistency and clarity.
Q: What if I missed quota last year?
A: Keep the role and lead with another real result. Be ready to explain the year and what you learned.
